New County Council Chairman Alarmed By Spending

Matthew Durham’s data analysis has caught the attention of Oconee’s new council chairman, who is concerned about the alarming rate at which county appropriations have been growing since 2016.

According to Durham’s latest newsletter, sustainable budgeting practices are necessary to address this issue. He pointed out that the county administrator’s recommended budget for FY 23/24 was $67,072,222, but during a recent Finance Committee meeting, he proposed a motion that passed with a 3-2 vote.

The motion directed the county administration to revise the budget to less than $65,231,000, which represents a ceiling based on the growth of the county and inflation.
