NRC Review of Oconee Nuclear Station’s Environmental Impact Statement

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has given a positive review to Oconee Nuclear’s draft environmental impact statement, a key step in Duke Energy’s license renewal process for the Oconee Nuclear Station. This comes as Duke aims for a 50% carbon reduction by 2030 and net-zero by 2050. The NRC found no significant issues in areas such as fisheries, cultural resources, and air quality that would prevent a new 20-year license for the station’s three reactors. However, during a public comment session, concerns were raised about the consideration of climate change and safety during extreme weather events.
