OC Residents warned about Check Scam

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office warns residents about another scam. Recently, an Oconee County resident received a check from a sweepstakes company for $8,000 and was told to call a number and speak with someone. The victim called and was told to deposit the check and then withdraw $6,400 so an attorney could get the money for the final distribution of $2 million. Instead, the intended victim called the sweepstakes company who said this was a scam. Fortunately, this Oconee County resident did not lose any money. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents, if an offer sounds too good to be true, more often than not it is. Very often, if someone you do not do business with asks you to deposit money and send them a cut, it is more than likely a scam.
