OC Sheriff reminding about Stopped School Bus Laws

Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw wants to clear up any confusion regarding whether motorists have to stop for a school bus that is either picking up or dropping off children. According to South Carolina State Law, motorists traveling on two lane roads in both directions must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights. However, motorists approaching a stopped bus from the opposite direction traveling on roads with four or more lanes do not have to stop for a stopped school bus. The penalties are severe for motorists that go around a stopped school bus. The minimum penalty is a fine of $500 plus court costs or 30 days in jail in addition to six points off your driver’s license. For a second offense, the fine increases to a minimum of $2,000 up to a maximum of $5,000 plus court costs or 60 days in jail plus six additional points off your license. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists to be careful, use caution around bus stops and school zones, and be aware the students and children may not see you so you should look out for them. In addition, there will be an increased law enforcement presence in those areas during the morning and afternoon drop-off and pick-up times. Moreover, many school buses around the state now carry cameras to record anyone who may break the law.
