OC Sheriff’s Office issues Scam Alert

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office investigated a potential scam on Monday that first involved the Internal Revenue Service and later Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw. A deputy spoke with a complainant in the West Union area who said she received a call from someone who sounded as if they had a foreign accent and claiming to be from the IRS. The individual told the complainant that after an audit, the IRS was owed $4,500. Then the complainant asked more specific questions, during which time the caller became upset and hung up the phone. A short time later the same caller, a male, called back and claimed to be Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw. The caller advised the complainant that an arrest warrant would be issued. The complainant disconnected and then contacted the Sheriff’s Office. If you receive a call of this nature, do not give out any personal information or purchase items such as a green dot card and place money on that card to send to any callers. Instead, hang up and contact the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.
