OC to discuss Fire Safe SC

Last year, there were 102 fire fatalities in South Carolina and as of March 28, 2018, there have already been 35 lives lost to fire. Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King invites the community to a discussion on Fire Safe South Carolina. “Reducing ignitions can reduce fire fatalities. There is need in our community, and others across our state, to work together to promote fire and life safety messaging. In fact, 70% of homes in our state do not have adequate smoke alarm coverage. A majority of fire fatalities involve human factors we can prevent. The purpose of this meeting is to provide an overview of Fire Safe South Carolina, a community risk reduction program. We will review current state and county community risk profiles, discuss current risk reduction activities, and allow for networking opportunities with state and local stakeholders. As part of the discussion, State Fire Marshal Jonathan Jones will discuss how current fire codes relate to the concerns over violent acts in schools. Support the change to do our part in becoming a Fire Safe South Carolina.” The Fire Safe South Carolina Meeting in Oconee County takes place on Thursday, April 19, at 6pm at the Westminster Fire Department, which is located at 216 Emergency Lane.
