Oconee County Council Fails to Pass “Sanctuary for the Unborn” Resolution

Oconee County Council met last night and District Two Representative Matthew Durham presented a resolution that was described by some opponents as “divisive.”…

Durham was supported in his endeavor by District Five Representative Glenn Hart…

Chairman John Elliott of District One, District Three’s Paul Cain and District Four’s Julian Davis said that, in principle, they oppose abortion, but they don’t think it’s something the county government should address.

Several people, including local resident Abby Perrone, spoke against the measure during the public comments session of the meeting, and argued that a “progressive image” in the eyes of potential investors and tourists could be damaged with such a public stance of signage stating the designation.

The “sanctuary for the unborn” resolution failed to pass by a vote of 3-2.
