Oconee County Councilmen debate budget increase limit ordinance

Oconee County Councilmen debated a proposed “Oconee Conservative Budget” ordinance, limiting budget increases to the county’s population growth plus inflation. Councilman Davis proposed postponing the vote until Chairman Durham could attend in person, but the motion failed.

Councilman Elliott highlighted Oconee’s low property tax millage rate. Davis disputed Durham’s claim that the fiscal year 2023-24 budget was $60.7 million…

The council passed a $60,766,345 budget by a 3-2 vote, and the ordinance passed its second reading by the same margin.
