Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Continues Investigation into Thursday Afternoon Shooting

Update: According to the child’s family, she underwent surgery and is stable in ICU.

Update from the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office:

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation this evening into a shooting incident in which a seven year old girl was shot.

Dispatchers received a call around 3:25pm this afternoon of a reported shooting at 260 Taylor Road, which is a West Union address near the Picket Post Community. When deputies, investigators and first responders arrived on scene, they discovered that a juvenile female had sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

First aid was administered to the victim and the firearm, which is a handgun, was secured at the scene. The victim was transported to a landing zone at the intersection of Highway 183 and Highway 11, where she was transported by medical helicopter to the hospital for further treatment.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence and continued the process of gathering evidence in the case.

At this time, the Sheriff’s Office believes that the shooting was accidental in nature, which is based upon the evidence and facts that have been gathered so far.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation and there is no danger to the public.

Around 3:25pm this afternoon, Oconee County Sheriff’s Deputies and paramedics responded to a Taylor Road residence near West Union amid reports of a 7 year-old who had sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Initial reports from the Sheriff’s Office are that there is no public threat, and the wound may have been accidental. The child is being flown by medical helicopter to an area hospital for further treatment.
