Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Provides Information on New Constitutional Carry Law

On March 7th, South Carolina became a Constitutional Carry state. This law allows individuals 18 or older, who are not legally prohibited, to carry firearms openly or concealed without a permit. Firearms can also be stored in vehicles without a permit. However, restrictions apply to carrying firearms in certain locations like schools, churches, and public buildings. The law also increases penalties for felons in possession of firearms and for crimes involving firearms without a valid permit. Despite the new law, the Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) program will continue, and it’s recommended to maintain a CWP for reciprocity laws in other states and easier firearm purchase. The law also mandates reporting of lost or stolen firearms within ten days and allows Clerks of Court and Public Defenders to carry firearms with a valid CWP.
