Oconee Heritage Center announces Summer Camps

Oconee Appalachian Kids, also known as OAK, is an educational program at the Oconee Heritage Center for children ages six through 12. This summer, the OHC will offer four different day camps that connect to the rich history and heritage of Oconee County. Camp fees include craft supplies and other materials for the day as well as snacks that will be distributed during each camp. Campers need to wear comfortable clothing and bring sunscreen and bug spray, if necessary. The first camp is entitled Shaping of South Carolina on June 16 from 9am-1pm. Hear kids will learn how our state got its shape as well as all things South Carolina. This fun day coincides with the temporary exhibit, The Shaping of South Carolina, on loan from the South Carolina Historical Society. Campers will learn about geography, surveying, and all the things that make South Carolina a wonderful place to live. The second camp called, Folk Arts Day, takes place on July 7 from 9am-1pm. Campers will get to display their creative side by learning about heritage-based art and practice the art themselves. Activities will include painting, weaving, pottery, and more. Camp three entitled, Wilderness Day, is scheduled for July 21 from 9am-1pm. Campers will learn wilderness safety, as well as skills to take on your next family wilderness adventure. Activities will include bird watching, plant identification, and more. The final camp called, Play Day, is set for Aug. 4 from 9am-1pm. Play day is all about fun, as campers learn how children in the past played without technology. The cost for all four camps is $60 for members and $80 or non-members. Individual camps cost $15 for members and $20 for non-members. For more information, visit www.oconeeheritagecenter.org.
