Oconee Humane Society Receives Pet Smart Grant

The Oconee Humane Society was recently awarded a grant from Pet Smart Charities® to fund a spay/neuter program for approximately 600 cats in Oconee County over the span of one year.  The program, called the “$ix Dollar Fix,” will allow residents of the area to have their cats spayed or neutered for a co-pay of $6. To qualify for this new targeted spay/neuter program, participants must be Oconee County residents living inside the boundaries of Wells Highway and Highway 123. This area sees the largest number of cat intake by animal control, largely due to higher population density.  Starting August 1, residents living within the target area will be able to apply at the Humane Society for a certificate for discounted surgery, which they can then redeem at certain local veterinarian offices. Applicants will be asked to provide a proof of residence, in the form of a current utility bill, lease agreement or property tax bill as well as a current photo ID. The average number of pets brought into the Oconee County Animal Shelter each year is 6,080, which is three times the national average. The Oconee Animal Shelter is located at 1925 Sandifer Blvd in Seneca and is open for spay/neuter certificate applications Monday through Friday from 10am to 5pm.
