Official says Stay Off OC Roads

Tuesday afternoon’s snow in Oconee County froze overnight causing roads to be hazardous.  Oconee County Emergency Management Director Scott Krein is telling residents to stay off the road.  “With the road conditions; everything last night when it got real cold froze to the roads.  We are in the process between county and state, trying to get those roads sanded but we are encouraging everyone to stay off the road and let it thaw and we are not expecting temperatures rise until after noon.” A number of traffic accidents have been reported in the Friendship area of the county, adds Chief Krein. “We’ve had a lot of accidents in the Friendship Road area and we have sent extra sand trucks, county and state, over in that direction, Martin Creek and a lot of those roads, to try to deal with that.” If you must go out, Chief Krein offers these tips. “First thing is they need to slow down, they need to increase the distance between vehicles and start stopping a lot sooner.  Also make sure that just because the road is dry where you are at, doesn’t mean that over the hill that it won’t still have ice on it at this point.” Stay in and stay warm on this first snow day of the year.
