OHC Piggy Bank Fundraiser nets $438

The failure of the one-cent capital project sales tax referendum leaves the Oconee Heritage Center more than $400,000 short to renovate and improve its facilities. However, the downtown Walhalla museum has not given up. It recently asked residents to fill their piggy bank, explains Oconee Heritage Center curator and director Leslie White. “We had worked very hard to promote passing the referendum to get the pennies for our projects that we were trying to fund. So, since it didn’t pass we are still very interested in having those pennies, if people support us and want our projects to continue. We had our Piggy Bank Fundraiser to kick that effort off, for a three-day period we did really well, we raised $438, mostly in loose change, which took a little while to count. I want to thank everybody who came out and dropped off their change. We will probably be doing it again periodically throughout the year as people build up more change.” The Oconee Heritage Center continues to collect donations for any amount, pennies or bills it does not matter.
