Pickens County Glass Upcycling Contest

The demand for recyclable glass has declined, leading to increased glass waste in landfills like the one in Pickens County. To address this issue, Pickens County Solid Waste Director, Steve Raines, and the county council have launched a glass upcycling contest.

The goal is to encourage community participation in reusing glass and reducing landfill contributions. In the contest, Pickens County residents are invited to submit ideas for upcycling glass materials at home, promoting reuse or the purchase of reusable materials. The aim is to prevent glass from reaching landfills, benefiting both the community and the landfill operation. Glass in landfills not only takes up valuable space but also complicates landfill operations, incurring additional expenses for taxpayers.

Landfills, operating on tight budgets, rely on recyclables to cover costs like payroll, fuel, maintenance, and equipment. The contest offers a weekend stay at Mount Creek County Park on Lake Keowee as an incentive for participants. Submissions are accepted until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, November 16th.
