Plane crash near Lake Keowee

A small plane crashed near Lake Keowee Sunday afternoon around 5:45pm. Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King reports that the pilot and his passenger were not injured in the crash. Apparently, the pilot reported engine failure and tried to land on a newly constructed residential street. First responders found the pilot along McAlister Road near West Union. Chief King says the experimental plane sustained heavy damage. Units from Keowee-Ebenezer Station 11, West Union Station 16, Greenville Hospital System EMS and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
