Plane Crashed Saturday in Lake Hartwell

Our sister station WLHR in Lavonia, Georgia reports that dive crews are working to recover the wreckage from an airplane that crashed in Lake Hartwell on Saturday afternoon around 12:30pm near Elrod Ferry and Long Point Recreation Area off of Old Highway 29 near Hartwell, Georgia.

Divers found the Beechcraft B55 submerged in about 120 feet of water, and the Sheriff’s Office said the pilot, who was the only occupant, did not survive. That individual’s identity would be released once the family had been notified.

Officials are speculating that spatial disorientation could have played a factor in the crash. The aircraft was on it’s way to the Anderson Regional Airport, officials said.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating.
