Preparation pays off battling Fire near Oconee Nuclear Station

Unit One at Oconee Nuclear Station remains off line as a precaution following Sunday afternoon’s fire in a large transformer in the switchyard outside of the plant. About 40 firefighters needed less than 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. Oconee County Emergency Services Director Chief Scott Krein says preparation paid off battling the fire. “A lot of things came together with training and personnel. W work together and we constantly train together and this was a good opportunity for use to show that our training is worth doing. We included the Emergency Action Plan and we had the Emergency Operations Center up to deal with any situation that did arise and give the public the information that they needed.” No one was hurt in the fire, there was no damage to the building or the containment area and no potential for a radiation release. In addition, no evacuations or traffic detours were required.
