PRINCIPAL PEOPLE: The Cherokee Heritage of Anderson County and the South Carolina Upstate

Temporary Exhibit open now through October 26,2023

ANDERSON: The award-winning Anderson County Museum has been conserving the stories of our community and “Letting History Speak” since 1983. Currently showcased in our temporary gallery is Principal People, which explores the rich history and culture of the Cherokee people.

Anderson County was once territory of an expansive Cherokee Nation. Principal People explores the origins of the Cherokee people, their interactions with white settlers, the tragedy of Removal, and their enduring heritage in the South Carolina Upstate. The study is driven by genuine artifacts made by Cherokee craftspeople or their ancestors over many centuries, some even more than 1,000 years old. The roots of this great culture remain ingrained in our county, born out by the artifacts, sites, and place names left behind.

Don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in the captivating history of the Cherokee in Upstate South Carolina and gain a deeper understanding of their legacy. The exhibit will be open through October 26th.
