Rabid Raccoon Confirmed in Oconee County

A rabid raccoon was found in Seneca, S.C. near Armstrong Road and Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway. One dog was exposed and will be quarantined. No people were exposed. The raccoon was tested positive for rabies on August 9, 2023. If you or your pets had contact with this raccoon or any other rabid animal, call DHEC’s Public Health Anderson office at (864) 372-3270 or (888) 847-0902 after hours. To prevent rabies, avoid touching wild and stray animals and vaccinate your pets. This is the third rabid animal in Oconee County and the 41st in the state this year.
