Recreation areas on Hartwell Lake open soon for hunting

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Office will open three of its larger Georgia recreation areas for archery and small game hunting during the regular 2022-2023 hunting season, and some South Carolina areas, too.

Georgia areas include:

1.)  Hartwell Dam Quarry Area, Hart Co., Ga. (410 acres) – restricted to archery equipment only during deer and turkey seasons. Permit is required.

2.) 2) New Prospect Park, Hart Co., Ga. (34 acres);

3.) 3.) Jenkins Ferry Park, Stephens Co., Ga. (31 acres)

Small game hunting is allowed in the three areas listed above, but only outside the deer and turkey seasons. Hunting for small game is restricted to shotgun only with number 4 shot or smaller. Waterfowl hunting is prohibited.

Hunting for deer and turkey is restricted to archery equipment only – all firearms are prohibited.

A hunting permit is required for the Quarry hunting area.  All hunters must visit the Hartwell Project office at 5625 Anderson Hwy, Hartwell, GA with a valid GA hunting license to obtain a permit. Hunting regulations, license requirements, and seasons set by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources still apply.

Areas are opened on a walk-in or boat-in only basis. No motorized vehicles will be allowed within the gated area. Only portable stands and blinds are acceptable and must be removed from public lands after the season. South Carolina Areas:

Corps areas listed below are considered part of the SCDNR Fant’s Grove Wildlife Management Area.

1.) South Carolina River, Anderson Co., S.C. (125 acres);

2.) Glenn Ferry Park, Anderson Co., S.C. (211 acres);

3.) Apple Island Park, Anderson Co., S.C. (107 acres);

4.) Townville Park, Anderson Co., S.C. (23 acres);

5.) Camp Creek Park, Anderson Co., S.C. (48 acres);

6.) Martin Creek Park, Oconee Co., S.C. (60 acres); and

7.) Choestoea Park, Oconee Co., S.C. (369 acres)

Hunting is prohibited in all developed recreation areas, except those listed above.

All other public lands and waters of the Hartwell Project, including islands, are open to hunting in accordance with Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations and Georgia and South Carolina hunting regulations. For Title 36 information, visit Title 36 Doc.

If hunting on the islands, big game hunters are encouraged to use archery equipment, only, due to safety concerns.
