SANITARY SEWER OVERFLOWS

The intense rain and the resulting flooding were too much for parts of the wastewater collection system operated by the Joint Regional Sewer Authority at Seneca. Diluted wastewater has spilled along Flat Rock Road at the Duck Pond reservoir south of Walhalla and at the Seneca Creek pump station near 123 and the Wells Highway. According to the JRSA, drinking water should not be affected. Once stream flows return to normal levels, bacteria samples are to be collected. Until the advisory is lifted, people and pets downstream of the two areas should avoid contact with the water. The Coneross Creek Water Reclamation Facility received 5.9″ of rain during a 12-hour period. According to National Weather Service guidelines, that corresponds to a 25 to 50-year storm event in the Seneca area.
