SC campaigns to increase Organ and Tissue donations

Several South Carolina groups want to double the number of people who register as potential organ and tissue donors.  The Associated Press reports that the campaign is supported by the nonprofit Donate Life South Carolina and the state Department of Motor Vehicles. South Carolina officials say more than 98% of the people in the state’s registry signed up through the state DMV. However, the state ranks 45th in the nation with a donor designation rate of about 20%. State officials say there are about 1,000 people in the state who need an organ transplant, and the numbers are increasing. Last year, about 100 people in the state became organ donors upon their deaths, donating more than 360-transplanted organs.
