SC celebrates World Diabetes Day

On Friday, South Carolina joined the country in celebrating World Diabetes Day. To commemorate the day, the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion was lit in blue and Governor Nikki Haley issued a statewide proclamation. About 800,000 people in the Palmetto State suffer from Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. More than 250 million people in the world suffer from diabetes with only 25 or 50% of them aware of their illness. Governor Haley urges South Carolinians to be aware of Type 1 diabetes and its symptoms, which often first appear in childhood. The governor also encourages state residents to make healthy lifestyle decisions to diminish the effects of Type 2 diabetes, which can be managed by maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly.
