SCDOT prepares for Second Winter Storm

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has preparations underway for the second winter weather event of the week. Forecasters indicate this storm should produce accumulations of precipitation across the Upstate of South Carolina. SCDOT Maintenance units in the region started their crews on 12-hour rotating shifts early Wednesday morning. The units are prepared to begin pretreating bridges and sections of interstate highways and primary routes as the weather develops. In addition to these Maintenance forces, crews in counties east of the Midlands and in the Lowcountry have already been deployed to the Upstate to assist in road-clearing operations. SCDOT’s primary mission in winter storms focuses on the interstate highways, some primary routes and other select highways that lead to hospitals and other emergency facilities. All SCDOT maintenance units in every county have been fully re-stocked with salt, sand, brine and the other materials used in de-icing operations earlier this week. SCDOT urges motorists to use caution at all times, particularly in icy conditions. Caution should be used for your safety and for those who are working to keep the highways open.
