School Districts waiting on Legislature to decide Weather Make Up Days

Upstate school districts are awaiting a ruling from the South Carolina Legislature in regards to weather make up days, explains Oconee County Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Thorsland. “I’m not exactly where it is in the Legislative process but word is that they are seeking to approve a bill that would allow school districts to forgive up to three days. I think the language in the legislation would leave it up to local school boards to make the final call but the Legislature would authorize up to three days to be forgiven after the three days built into the calendar were taken. Therefore, in Oconee County’s situation, we missed a total of four days due to bad weather this year. Three of those are going to be made up, two of them we have already made up and we will make up the third next Monday. Then we would need one to be forgiven, so we would put that on the agenda for the April board meeting for our school board to decide.” Most Upstate school districts would only need one day forgiven from the South Carolina Legislature, according to Dr. Thorsland.
