School make-up day planned for Monday in SDOC

Because ice forced the School District of Oconee County to close school on Tuesday and Wednesday, those days now have to be made up. The first of the District’s inclement weather make up days is planned for Monday, Feb. 23, explains Oconee County Assistant Superintendent of Operations Steve Hanvey. “On Monday we will have our first make up day and people need to understand that it was a little late in the process but we are required by the state to have three make up day and we take them in the order that they come.” The state Department of Education dictates when those days are made up, continues Hanvey. “We know that people have made plans and we know there are some people that are frustrated by that but those are listed as make up days for a reason. Those are not vacation days and there is no guarantee that people are going to get to use those, so while we understand that we are required by the state to have three and to use them in order. We can’t skip one and then add another make up day later.” The day missed because of the weather on Wednesday is also scheduled to be made up in March, concludes Hanvey. “The second day will be Monday, March 16 that now we will make up. We have one more make up day built in our calendar and that is the Monday after spring break. Depending upon the weather and what we have to do, we may or may not use it. So, we keep our fingers crossed that we don’t have to use it because it is no fun for us when we have to make those decisions.” To read the complete school calendar for the School District of Oconee County, visit their website at www.oconee.k12.sc.us.
