SDOC Board Meeting Tonight

The Board of Trustees for the Oconee County School District is set to meet at the newly constructed Seneca Middle School, situated at 15440 Wells Highway, Seneca, at 6 p.m. today.

The meeting’s agenda features a report by Superintendent Michael Thorsland on School Library Month, Special Olympics, and the Testing Calendar. Thorsland, along with Steve Hanvey, the Associate Superintendent of Administration, will present discussion and action items. These include the rescheduling of the June Board Retreat/Combined Meeting, a proposal for the donation of used chairs, the FY25 General Fund Budget, and the first reading approval of Policy IKA-R, which pertains to Grading/Assessment Systems. An executive session is also planned to discuss recommendations/changes in employment and professional contracts for the 2024-25 academic year.

In preparation for a decision by the Oconee County school trustees, an appraisal of the existing Seneca Middle School building and property has been authorized by the district. The appraiser, as reported by Associate Superintendent Steve Hanvey, estimates the current value at $1.85 million. If the building were to be demolished, the value would decrease to $1 million.

The trustees are expected to make a decision regarding the future of the complex once it is vacated for a replacement school at the conclusion of this academic year.
