SDOC looking for Graduation Venues

On June 7, the School District of Oconee County holds graduation ceremonies for its four high schools at Littlejohn Coliseum on the campus of Clemson University.  However, next year the district has to find a new venue, explains Oconee County Schools interim Superintendent Dr. Michael Thorsland.  “When Clemson announced that Littlejohn was going to be undergoing renovations at the end of next basketball season, it meant that high schools that graduate there are going to have to find a different venue for at least two years, so we are actually soliciting input from the families of the two classes that will have to graduate somewhere other than Littlejohn, which would be this year’s juniors and sophomores in our high schools.” Flyers have been sent home with these students, continues Dr. Thorsland.  “High school principals distributed a flyer with information and gave those families a chance to responded and kind of give their ideas.” The School District has contingencies already being considered, concludes Dr. Thorsland.  “We could find another venue similar to Littlejohn Coliseum, the negative with that is that it would probably mean driving a little bit further because Littlejohn is the closest venue with that much seating capacity.  We would have to go into Anderson or Greenville possibly.  Another option would be graduating at the high school, in the football stadiums, but you run the risk of bad weather and then inside the gymnasium, you would have to limit the number of tickets each student would get for graduation.” Submit venue suggestions for graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2015 and 2016 in the School District of Oconee County to your student’s high school principal or to the District Office in Walhalla.
