Seneca City Council honors Garland Smith

On his 100th birthday, the Seneca City Council recognized and honored Garland Smith for calling the city home since the late 1930s. Seneca Mayor Pro-tem Ronnie O’Kelley tells more about the proclamation ceremony on behalf on Garland Smith. “Yesterday was Garland’s 100th birthday, but he is still very active and his daughter Carol was in town and of course Mike, his son, is our City Attorney. We recognized him, read the resolution and made several pictures with him.” Mayor Pro-tem O’Kelley says Mr. Garland Smith has no plans of slowing down any time soon. “It was a special night for him and his family and as I talked with him, he said that his dad lived to be 102, so he has some more plans out there of things to do.” Smith managed the Belk department store in downtown Seneca from 1939-1981. During that time, Belk served as the anchor retail outlet in the city’s downtown.
