Seneca City Council signs Proclamation as part of National Safe Boating Campaign

It is tempting not to wear a life jacket while enjoying nice days on the water. However, whether you are going fishing or enjoying a ride on the boat, there is never an excuse not to wear a life jacket. As part of National Safe Boating Week, May 16-22, 2015, the Seneca City Council signed a proclamation at their meeting Tuesday night. Seneca Mayor Dan Alexander encourages residents to wear a life jacket and be safe on the water. “We want to make sure that everyone makes boat safety the number one priority. If they are out on the lake, we encourage them to be safe. Wear a life jacket because the number one cause of death on the water is drowning. So we encourage wearing a life jacket because we want people to live. If you are in a boat, act responsible, no drinking, but number one, always make sure that you wear your life jacket.” The North American Safe Boating Campaign, known as Wear It, is a yearlong effort in the United States and Canada focused on spreading the message of boating safety and the critical importance of always wearing a life jacket each and every time on the water. In addition, the campaign also reminds boaters of the importance of boating safely, such as taking a boating safety course, never boating under the influence, and knowing navigational rules. The annual campaign kicks off the weekend before Memorial Day with National Safe Boating Week and continues throughout the year.
