Seneca Council approves $148K in HAT Funds

The Seneca City Council approved $148,000 in Hospitality Accommodations Tax or HAT requests at their monthly meeting this week.  Seneca Mayor Dan Alexander explains, “What the HAT allows us to do it allows us to generate money where you buy food and stay in this town but it allows us to do events that bring people to the community.” Mayor Alexander says the HAT fund allows the city to give back to its residents. “It gives us the opportunity to give back to the community.  When you look at what we do, we do so many different things.  It is not just 4th of July and Memorial Day, it is the arts, the Black History Month, the Lunney Museum, the Bertha Lee Strickland Museum, and all the races and events.  I just think about all the different things that we are able to do that you would not be able to do.” The Hospitality Accommodations Tax also benefits the city in several ways, concludes Mayor Alexander. “It helps our downtown, it helps our city and it gives the people in this community something to look forward to and I am just grateful that we have it and we continue to support different every year.” Twice a year, the city’s finance committee takes HAT Fund requests, which entice people to come to Seneca to spend money.
