Seneca Police building relationships with Popsicles

In the wake of the tragic police shootings across the country, the Seneca Police Department (SPD) is taking a new approach to building relationships in the community. Lt. Lisa Williams, the Victims Advocate for the SPD, says officers recently took popsicles to kids as a way of breaking the ice to build positive relationships. “One of the officers bought popsicles and about 4 or 5 of the officers went down to a lot of the lower income areas in our city and passed out popsicles and police stickers. They did this totally on their own, thought it up, took some time, just went, and did that. They interacted with the children and that is such a positive thing. They are going to do it again, they are going to take another area of the city and do it. We are going to do candy and badges this time.” Its all about connecting with the community in which you serve, continues Lt. Williams. “We try to reach out to the community to let them know we do care about them and we care about all of our citizens.” Lt. Williams thinks about a saying from Seneca Police Chief John Covington. “The chief says this a lot and he is right, if you try to do the right thing ever single time for the right reasons, then that is where you need to be. That is true, you do it not for glory, not for a pat on the back but you do it because it is the right thing to do.” The Seneca Police Department plans to continue doing outreach events in the future in order to build and foster better relationships with the community.
