Seneca pursues annexation east of the City

The City of Seneca looks to extend its boundary by 34 acres through annexing a city owned building and related properties. The city’s Facilities Corporation recently voted unanimously to pursue the annexation of the Seneca Rail Site industrial building and connected property, explains Seneca Mayor Dan Alexander. “The Facilities Corporation made a recommendation to annex the city owned property into the city and then at a future date the county owns the property there that they would actually annex in too.” The annexation application must first be considered by the Seneca Planning Commission and then by the city council. The mayor explains why the Facilities Corporation was formed. “The Facilities Corporation was formed so we could actually manage property and it gives us a mechanism to actually buy, sell and develop property.” The Seneca Rail Site, formerly the Propex manufacturing building, already has tenants, adds Mayor Alexander. “When we looked at the Propex Property, which is out on Shiloh Road that was actually a joint venture between Seneca and Oconee County. We felt like it was a very attractive piece of property that had lots of potential. What has happened since then, we have been able to get about three or four tenants in the building. There is actually a couple hundred-thousand square feet left in the building that there is lots of interest.” The mayor says the project to create a new industrial park has proven to be a great partnership between the city and county. “This is a great partnership between the city and county. I really can’t say enough about Oconee County Administrator Scott Moulder and the County Council, they have just been excellent to work with the last several years, and we have been able to do many good projects together.” The annexation application covers only Seneca owned property, although it is understood that the county eventually will ask the city to annex its part too.
