Seven killed on SC Highways over weekend

As the summer driving season winds down, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces seven people killed on state roadways over the weekend. Labor Day marks the end of the summer driving season, sometimes referred to as the 100 deadliest driving days of the year. As of Aug. 24, 460 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 483 highway deaths during the same time period in 2013. In Oconee County, seven people have died on state roadways in 2014 compared to one in 2013 at this same time. Pickens County reports seven in 2014 and eleven in 2013. Anderson County has experienced 25 highway fatalities in 2014 compared to 17 in 2013. Of the 330 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2014, 163 were not wearing seat belts. Through midnight August 24, 51 pedestrians, 50 motorcyclists and 7 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of midnight Aug. 24, 2014.
