Six killed on SC Highways over Weekend

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces six people were killed on state roadways from Friday, September 6, at 6pm until Sunday, September 8, at midnight. As of September 8, 492 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 562 highway deaths in this same time period in 2012. Oconee County lists two highway fatalities in 2013 compared to ten in 2012 at this same time.  Pickens County reports 10 deaths in 2013 and 11 in 2012.  Anderson County has experienced 18 highway fatalities in 2013 compared to 30 in 2012.  Of the 328 motor vehicle occupants who have died statewide in 2013, 189 were not wearing seat belts.  Through midnight September 8, 56 pedestrians, 81 motorcyclists and 9 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. These numbers are preliminary and are based on fatal collisions compiled by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety as of midnight September 8, 2013.
