Small Box Store Moratorium Possible for Walhalla

Right now, the City of Walhalla is a quaint community situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, it’s historic downtown lined with small, independent Mom & Pop style businesses. And if the Mayor and Council have their way, it will remain as such.

An ordinance that would implement a moratorium on small box discount stores, like Dollar General or Family Dollar, for a period of four months has been prepared for the Mayor’s signature and will be presented at tonight’s city council meeting.

The ordinance calls for a review of the city’s current zoning ordinance and downtown development plans. It also calls for any needed adjustments to be made to the City’s Codes and Regulations, and for sufficient public hearings on the matter.

This evening’s meeting starts at 5:30 pm at Walhalla City Hall.
