Soda Behavior of U.S. Kids, a bubbling concern

A new study in the Journal of Pediatrics suggests that 5-year-olds who consumed more than one soda or fizzy drink per day have a high incidence of disruptive behavior and attention disorders. The lead researcher, Shakira Suglia gives details. “We know among those consuming the highest levels of soda consumption to be exhibiting higher aggressive behaviors and attention problems.” Suglia says they don’t yet have data showing whether sugar-free sodas are not so bad, and whether it might be sodas with high caffeine content.  “It could be the sugar or it could be the caffeine or it could be a number of the other ingredients contained in soda, we just don’t know specifically what that would be.” More research is planned on the study to determine which soda ingredients are causing the increased incidences of disruptive behavior and attention disorders in kids.  However, researchers believe soda consumption by kids should be monitored and limited.
