State Watchdog Agency warns of Scam targeting Hotel Guests

The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs is warning consumers about a common scam that targets hotel guests. The agency said scammers call hotel guests in their rooms, attempting to “verify” the guest’s credit card information. Believing the caller is the front desk, the guests will then relay the requested personal information. Follow these tips to avoid becoming a victim. Never give personal information to a cold caller. Instead, walk down to the front desk directly to inquire about the call. Consumers should report the call to the front desk, even if they were not victimized. Hotel employees rarely call guests after 9pm. Report scams to the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs by calling 1-800-922-1594.
