STEAM the focus of Summer Reading at OCPL

Grab your lab coat and safety goggles because this summer is all about experimenting with STEAM, that is to say science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.  Join the Oconee County Public Library for our Fizz, Boom, Read! summer reading program where you win prizes for reading books, make cool stuff, witness mind-blowing science experiments and meet fascinating people, all at your local public library and for free. For children and teens, some of the exciting programs planned are Professor Parsnip’s Lab of Healthy Choices, American Giants of Science, Science Saturdays, Minute-to-Win-it contests, Cosplay workshop, nail art, percussion performance, Crime Science Investigation, Q&A with a video gaming designer, and more.  Registration starts June 9 at all OCPL branches and the programs last until August 9.  A calendar of events will be provided at registration and can also be viewed on the library’s website at www.oconee.lib.sc.us.  Everyone in Oconee County, babies to adults, can participate. Adults can join in the reading fun by participating in the fifth Annual Adult Summer Reading Program for those ages 18 and older.   Register at your nearest branch and receive a reusable OCPL book bag along with your reading sheet. The more books you read, the more prizes you may receive.  Even if your summer does not allow you to spend much time reading, OCPL also has a variety of programs scheduled including crafts, trivia, gaming, and presenters like magicians and much more.  OCPL will have its annual BINGO party on August 2 at 1pm at the Seneca Library. All programs will wrap-up with OCPL’s first ever Library 5K and Fun Run co-sponsored by the Walhalla Junior Women’s League. This event will take place on August 9 at the Walhalla Library. Proceeds of the 5K will help sponsor next year’s summer reading program.
