Swinney responds to Group over Faith

Clemson University Head Football Coach Dabo Swinney says players “of any faith or no faith at all are welcome in the program.” Swinney issued a written response after a group recently accused his program of violating players’ constitutional rights by promoting Christianity. The Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a formal complaint to Clemson University last week claiming Swinney and team chaplain James Trapp violated those rights.  The group said it’s inappropriate for publicly-paid team leaders to hold prayer sessions, bible studies, devotional events and church visits. The Foundation claims those events are incorporated into the team’s regular schedule. Clemson University released a statement last week that stated “we believe the Freedom From Religion Foundation is mistaken in its assessment.”
