Tie down Holiday Trash

Oconee County earned the nickname “The Golden Corner” because of its scenic beauty. Tourists come from across the country to see the waterfalls, hike the mountains and swim in the lakes. The Keep Oconee Beautiful Association says let’s keep it that way, by securing trash before driving to the manned convenience centers this holiday season. “Christmas packages like people who get new TVs, they come in large cardboard boxes, those things float away out of the back of a truck real easy. From experience through the past holiday seasons, we have an increase number of calls from those type things. Folks will call in and say there are things on the side of highways like boxes and Christmas wrappings.” Corporal Tim Rice with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office serves on the Keep Oconee Beautiful Association Board. He says many times boxes and other holiday trash found on the side of the road contains names and addresses, which makes it very easy to issue littering situations. “I would encourage people this holiday season and any other time of the year, to make sure that you are wrapping that stuff up. Get it in a bag and tie it down in the back of trucks. So, that if I am seeing you, it is while we are getting coffee or eating lunch; rather than me knocking on your door because I have your Christmas packages or what is left of them, I should say.” Last month, Corporal Rice issued 43 tickets for littering in Oconee County.
