Trial Coming Up for Former SDOC Bus Driver

Judge Scott Sprouse will preside over Oconee General Sessions Court the week of March 6-10, and first trial on the docket is the case of South Carolina v. Windell Sutton Powell, Jr. 74-year-old Powell, Jr., of Seneca, was indicted by a grand jury in August on charges of Criminal Sexual Conduct with a Minor – 2nd Degree and Criminal Solicitation of a Minor as well as two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct with a Minor – 3rd Degree.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation in May of last year after a family member of the victim spoke with a deputy in regards to text messages that were discovered between the victim and Powell, Jr. which indicated a sexual relationship. It was determined by investigators that Powell, Jr. had sexually assaulted the victim, who was a teenager, between November 2021 and May 2022.

The investigation involved only one victim. Powell was released from jail on May 13th after he posted a $70,000 bond. He was fired from the School District of Oconee County last May, where he had worked as a school bus driver since October of 2016, after he was charged by the Sheriff’s Office.
