Two SHS Students to wear Military Honor Chords at Graduation

honor cordsEvery spring, graduates walking down the aisles to receive diplomas wear cords signifying various academic achievements. This spring, some graduates will be seen wearing red, white, and blue cords with their caps and gowns. Beginning in spring 2016, South Carolina high school graduates who are entering the military will be provided with red, white, and blue “honor” cords. The state is providing the cords to school districts at no cost. The School District of Oconee County typically has around 35 students enter the military each year. This year, some students have already made that decision. For example, Dakota Underwood and Evan Moxley, both from Seneca High School, will both join the Army after graduation. Principal Cliff Roberts applauded the cords as a way to honor graduates’ decisions to serve their country. “If we are going to honor academic and athletic success, why not honor the courage of these students who are going into the military?” Roberts said.
