Unauthorized Debris Burn in Anderson County

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) reported a fire at an unauthorized debris pile in Anderson County. The fire, which started near 516 Bowan Road, is producing smoke similar to that from yard trash fires, fire pits, or fireplaces. Although there are no known threats to public health or the environment, officials recommend avoiding inhaling the smoke. The Centerville Fire Department and the South Carolina Forestry Wildfire Division responded to the scene and created a fire break to prevent the fire from spreading. Some of the debris is partially underground, so the fire may smolder for several days. Exposure to smoke could worsen some pre-existing lung or heart conditions, so anyone with health concerns should consult a healthcare provider.
