“Unusual Event” Early Saturday Morning at ONS Reactor 2

What officials have described as “an unusual event” took place early Saturday morning around 5:00am at Duke Energy’s Oconee Nuclear Station Reactor 2.

Fire officials at the site responded and requested assistance from nearby agencies, including Oconee Emergency Services and Pickens County, as well, according to reports. It was determined that there was no fire, however, officials said.

Teams that assessed the situation described it as “an unusual event”, which, they said, is the lowest classification of four nuclear emergency levels. Reactors 1 and 3 at Oconee Nuclear Station are operating normally, and officials said there was no threat to the public. The emergency was terminated and crews released from the scene at 7:39am Saturday morning, according to Oconee County Emergency Services.
