Update on Copper Theft from sit of new WHS

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the theft of copper from the construction site of the new Walhalla High School on Highway 11 at Picket Post.  Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Jimmy Watt gives an update on the investigation. “We feel like through the process of our investigation that the individual or individuals who did this really knew what they were doing because the thefts happened at multiple trailers there on the site.  There was a copper theft last October from the construction site there but that was copper that was already installed in a building of the school and some of that copper has been recovered.  This obviously was a much bigger amount of copper that was taken.” According to Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw, although no dollar amount is available for the amount of copper taken, it appears to be “a substantial amount”. At this time, no arrests have been made in the case, adds Watt.  “We are still asking for the public’s help in this because we have followed up on leads and are continuing the investigation.  So far, no arrests have been made and we really do not have any solid persons of interest at this time.  What we are asking the public to do is partner with us, as we always say our vision statement is building partnerships to promote a safer community.  Part of that is working with our friends in the community in Oconee County, partnering with them and if they have any information, any leads, whatever the case may be, we just ask them to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC.” You do not have to give your name and if you tip leads to an arrest, you could be eligible for a cash reward.
