Upstate Residents warned about Jury Duty Scam

Upstate residents are being warned about another scam, this time involving jury duty. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office reports someone claiming to be an employee of their office is calling local residents and telling them, they missed jury duty. Then the caller says the resident must pay a fine to keep from going to jail. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office says this is a scam and all appointments to jury duty are handled by courts. The sheriff’s office does not track residents’ jury duty status and they do not have the authority to fine individuals or place them in jail without a court-issued order. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be with a law enforcement agency and you believe the call may be a scam, hang up and contact the agency to verify the call.
