Walhalla Police Officer fired after arrest

A Walhalla Police Officer has been fired after a man says he was assaulted while handcuffed. On Tuesday, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division announced that 25-year-old Zachary Covington stands charged with third-degree assault and battery in connection with an altercation on Sunday. SLED agents say Covington hit 27-year-old Matthew Lowell three times in the head at a Walhalla apartment complex. Lowell says he was handcuffed because he refused to put out a cigarette while two officers asked him where the mother of his child lives. Lowell was jailed until Tuesday on a charge of resisting arrest.
