Watch for Deer & Other Wildlife, Says AAA

AAA has issued a reminder to drivers that the months of October, November, and December are when most accidents involving animals occur. The Carolinas, in particular, has a large deer population, and many drivers often find themselves encountering these wild animals on the roads.

Here are some tips on how to handle encounters with deer and other wildlife on the roads: Avoiding Collisions –

  • Use high beams at night when there’s no oncoming traffic.
  • Deer are most active at dawn and dusk.
  • In areas with deer crossing signs, slow down and increase following distance.
  • If a deer is in the road, slow down, honk, and wait for it to move.
  • Don’t swerve.

If You Hit a Deer –

  • Pull over, turn on hazard lights, and report to police.
  • Stay away from the animal and wait for authorities.
  • Document any damage for insurance claims.
